Minister of Justice/Attorney General Extends Apologies To Community Members Affected by Protest of Former Aggrieved EPS Officers

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General , Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh on Friday, October 18, 2024 reached out to community members, institutions and other government agencies around the vicinity of the Ministry of Justice who were directly affected by the situation between Former Aggrieved EPS Officers and members of the Liberia National Police Riot Squad.

The Riot Squad was summoned after former aggrieved EPS Officers stormed the Ministry of Justice building on 14th Street ,Sinkor on Wednesday , October 16, 2024 in protest , demanding the intervention of the Minister of Justice/Attorney General on severance and other benefits due them , after being laid off several months ago by the EPS Administration.

At some point , the protest turned violent when the former aggrieved EPS Officers began throwing rocks at the riot police causing panic at the Ministry, surrounding communities and institutions.

Due to this escalated tension, the Riot Squad fired tear gas to diffuse the situation as rocks were thrown mindlessly.

Consequently, some schools ,government buildings and petty community traders around the Ministry of Justice were affected by the disruptive situation.

Against this background , the Minister of Justice/Attorney General , Cllr. Tweh met with Father Maroun Zogheib, Academic Director of Our Lady of Grace International School and Notre Dame University to apologize on behalf of the Government of Liberia for the disruption of their academic activities on the day of the incident and to assess any damage that may have been done.

Fortunately, there was no damage to both institutions . Father Zogheib, thanked the Minister of Justice for his noble action and praised the GOL for acknowledging and apologizing for the incident.

The Attorney General also met with some petty community traders and extended apologies on behalf of the Government of Liberia and personally reimbursed at least three (3) persons whose merchandise were destroyed during the incident.

Finally, the Minister of Justice reached out to the staff at the Annex of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation on 14th Street, to express his regret of the situation and for any inconveniences caused .

The action by the Attorney General assures the public that we are a government who takes responsibility for actions that affect the public.

The Attorney General was applauded and appreciated by all those affected in the premise for the action he took in this matter.

Bravo to the Attorney General for this very expedient action.
